How the subsidy is calculated

PM Surya Ghar pays central financial assistance (CFA) on the size of the rooftop system, not its price. For homes, the first 2 kW earn ₹30,000 per kW and the third kW earns ₹18,000. Anything above 3 kW adds nothing more, so the subsidy is capped at ₹78,000.

System size (home)SubsidySpecial category states
1 kW₹30,000₹33,000
2 kW₹60,000₹66,000
3 kW₹78,000₹85,800
5 kW or more₹78,000₹85,800

Housing societies and resident welfare associations receive ₹18,000 per kW for common facilities, for systems up to 500 kW.

How savings and payback are estimated

Monthly generation is the system size × units generated per kW per day × 30. Yearly savings multiply that by 12 and by your electricity tariff. The payback period is your cost after subsidy divided by yearly savings. Actual results depend on shading, roof direction, dust, maintenance and your DISCOM’s net-metering rules, and some states add their own incentives on top of the central subsidy.

How much subsidy is available for a 3 kW rooftop solar system?
Under PM Surya Ghar, homes receive central financial assistance of ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 per kW for the third kW — ₹78,000 for a 3 kW system. Larger home systems are capped at ₹78,000. Special category states and union territories receive about 10% more.
Which states get the higher special category subsidy?
The north-eastern states including Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
How much can a housing society or RWA get?
Group housing societies and resident welfare associations can receive ₹18,000 per kW for common facilities such as lighting and EV charging, for systems up to 500 kW. Choose “Housing society / RWA” in the calculator.
How accurate is the payback period?
It is an estimate from the numbers you enter: installed cost per kW, your electricity tariff and expected generation. Real generation depends on location, shading, roof direction and maintenance, and net-metering rules differ between DISCOMs.
Where do I apply for the subsidy?
Applications are made on the national PM Surya Ghar portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in), and the system must be installed by a registered vendor. Always confirm the current rates and eligibility on the portal before quoting.
